I know a lot of designers and programmers wouldn’t even think about starting a project without having some coffee first, but as an internet marketer, I feel the same way about starting anything whether it’s writing a blog post, tackling some customization in my Wordpress theme, designing a new website from scratch, or even cleaning my house.
I simply can’t seem to function very well without my caffeine fix.
So I’m just wondering if there are other WAHMs out there who have an alternative to thinking clearly and keeping momentum during the day without drinking massive amounts of coffee or tea like I do.
How many cups of coffee (or coke, tea, energy drinks, whatever) do you drink a day? If you don’t drink caffeine, what do you do to stay alert and focused all day?

I too drink entirely too much coffee throughout the day and would love to hear some thoughts on better ways to stay focused and keep up my energy. It’s almost to the point the caffeine does nothing after the first 2 cups anymore.

I’m drinking coffee right now, but try to limit my intake to 2 cups (more like mugs) in the morning and after this I will switch to water for the rest of the day. Maybe have a green tea in the afternoon if I feel like something less plain.
@Arika – My caffeine tolerance is building too. I drink out of giant mugs and I usually don’t feel any effects until I’m on my 2nd monster cup. I find that my alertness doesn’t last as long as it used to either. I have to shorten the time between cups or I want to fall asleep.
@Ginger – Water is a great option actually. I try and drink as much water as I can and it usually does a good job of keeping me alert. I feel better when I drink green tea too as opposed to coffee.
You know what’s weird is that when I drink coffee I crave water about the time afternoon rolls around. By crave I mean I have to drink a glass or two straight down in order to get over it. My body’s telling me something and I really should listen.
@Arika – I do too actually. After I’ve been drinking tea or coffee all morning, my throat gets really dry and scratchy in the afternoon and I need water just so I can swallow again. Why does caffeine have to be so mean?
Well, I’m a guy–not a WAHM–but this topic interested me.
When I have articles to write, I usually down a bottle of green tea, preferably Honey Green from Honest Tea.

It’s got 1/4 the caffeine in coffee, but it’s still a good pickup without the jitters.
Drinking water–staying hydrated–is an energy pickup for me. I feel sluggish when dehydrated.
Also, when I’m about to launch into the project, I put on fast-paced music–rock or techno (hah)–to get me going.
And of course, a full night’s sleep may be the best energy boosting method out there.

@Jesse – Music works great for me too, especially techno. Good old Daft Punk rocks my world!
I like to mash the beans and snort them. But not really. I need two cups, at least, and usually end up drinking three. Mmmm…. coffee.

@Writer Dad – Mmm, snorting coffee beans…..
I was holding off this morning but I can’t take it any more. That package of Starbucks in my cupboard better watch out.
