What work at home job can I do?

One of the most common questions I see on Internet Marketing or Work At Home Mom (WAHM) forums is “What work at home job can I do? I need help fast!”

I’ve even seen, “I need $2000 in two weeks. Can somebody tell me what I can do to achieve this?”

First of all, what these people need to do is read a little further down in the forum and they will find the same questions asked about 30 more times, and they each have the same answer. I’ll write more about forum tips and ethics later.

So, what is the answer to this commonly asked question?

You probably won’t like this answer, but I’m not going to fill your head with hopeless information and hype. I’m always going to be completely honest with you so I would have to say that, ultimately, it’s up YOU.

A lot of responses to this question include, “Do something you are passionate about“. While this can lead to you doing something you love, it doesn’t necessarily mean a lucrative or largely successful business because what you are passionate about may not be something that most people are even interested in.

You have to do some soul searching and figure out what you WANT to do. Something that you will enjoy so that you won’t lose focus after awhile. What may be successful for one person may not be successful for you.

I know plenty of moms who were able to quit their full time job and support their family by starting a direct sales business like Discovery Toys or Tupperware. But when I was looking for a way to work at home, the last thing I wanted to do was throw ‘parties’ and sell things to people. Sure, I would have made money, but I would have hated doing it. Other moms love it and have been really successful. So like I said before, it’s up to you and your interests.

Whether you start an online store (ecommerce), a content website, a consulting service or a direct sales business, it does need to be something you enjoy but also something that can grow and evolve. The great thing about having a home business or working online is there is almost always unlimited earning potential.

But unless you have an ingenious idea or you know some big names on the internet, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll make $2000 in two weeks. Not legitimately anyway. I’m sorry to crush your hopes, but if you want to make money online, it’s going to take a lot of hard work and time.

Be prepared to spend many late nights writing down your latest ideas and early mornings tweaking your web design. A blog or website should be an ever-evolving thing and is never truly finished.

So with that in mind, think about something that you enjoy doing or a topic that you know a lot about and concentrate on turning that into a project (or multiple projects) that can end up earning you money.
