Who gives a crap about Twitter followers?

Why I don’t give a shit about how many Twitter followers I have…

I’ve been using Twitter for almost a year now. I’ve enjoyed it and will continue to enjoy it for (I hope) a long while yet.

However, the amount of people who are “gaming” Twitter is increasing and I’m actually quite pissed off about it.

There are all kinds of people who have all kinds of “tips” to increase followers, get more retweets, etc. Here’s a tip for those people.

Be yourself! Be real! Stop ruining it for the rest of us!

Auto-following, auto-DMs, unfollowing people as soon as they follow you back – this crap has to stop.

I’m not talking about stuff like this (How To Get ReTweeted – The Formula) – I completely agree with that. It’s when people try and inflate their numbers and use automation. It’s deceiving!

There is no secret to Twitter. But there are definitely ways to turn it into shit so the rest of Twitterland has to suffer.

I’m not concerned that I don’t have as many Twitter followers as Joe Blow, Guru Extraordinaire. I care about my relationship with them.

You can have 5000 followers and not have any kind of genuine connection with any of them because you’re a douche and use crappy tactics to increase your numbers.

You could also have less than 300 followers and have a great relationship with them because you’re authentic. You’ll also have more respect from your readers – and you can’t put a price on that.

Ah Cassie…

I love you. I don’t care how many followers I have either.

I can easily add everyone who adds me without so much as looking at their profile but what would be the point?

I couldn’t agree with you more that I’d rather have a genuine connection and relationship with people than just play numbers games to see how many people I can get as followers.

This isn’t a popularity contest. I want to connect to people I have something in common with… a common cause, illness, interest, etc. I don’t want to randomly add as many people as possible as quickly as possible to obtain the highest number.

Today I was appalled to see highly offensive language posted by a “gentleman” (I’m using that term very loosely) who posted a comment for all of his followers to see (approximately 2,000).

It was totally inappropriate and truly like no message I’ve ever seen before on twitter. I immediately blocked him. This wasn’t borderline language. This was way over-the-line!

I love your post!

Yep I totally agree. I loved Twitter when I first started using it. Now? Well I’m so annoyed with all the spammy DM’s I get, etc that I’m starting to not like it so much anymore. I couldn’t tell you how many followers I have – I don’t look at that number. Never have never will. It’s all about having fun, building relationships and just being myself. It’s not about the numbers. I too could give a crap about that.

I know auto-DMs work for a lot of people (just like pop up subscription forms on blogs) but I like to stay personal. I suppose when you have follower numbers in the thousands that can be pretty much impossible, but when you take the time to respond to people individually, it can make a huge difference. A lot of the sales I make are from people who I’ve had personal contact with and I’m sure if I had used auto-DMs, I wouldn’t have built up a real relationship with most of them.
